This page provides an insight into the more advanced DCC conversions carried out on Bachmann split chassis models. These conversions involve precision milling of the chassis to create space for the decoder, along with a complete strip-down and rebuild of the chassis assembly in order to fully isolate the motor.
The photographs above illustrate the full conversion process on a Bachmann V3 Tank Engine, from initial disassembly through to the completed installation.
Although these models require a more involved conversion process, they perform exceptionally well on DCC. Their heavy split chassis design provides outstanding electrical pickup and excellent traction, while the smooth-running can motor offers a significant improvement over the older pancake motors used in the original Mainline models that inspired the design.
Bachmann refined the original Mainline split chassis concept into a far more capable and reliable system, resulting in locomotives that still make excellent candidates for DCC conversion today.
